WRITING SAMPLE

He was under her spell
yet the muse felt subjugated.

I see men
kicking a man’s chest.
“What time is it?”
I wondered of this century.
And in front of me, wearing an echo
          more private than the beating,
          a woman.
That’s my wife, I say.
I have never seen her before.

What the echo communicates
is that she no longer wants
to be an officer.
A helmet on her head,
        she places her delicate palm
on the edge of the guillotine.
Quel siècle est cette? she asks me.
Then, of the men,
“Which one is one of them?”

She turns to me
with the hanging rope
as if she is asking me to dance.
“It is high noon,” she says
         whispering it along
         around my neck.
I can tell you’re mine, I say.
“Times are changing,” she says
in broken Arabic.
